A Cross-Canada Bike Tour for Organics

SPOKE (Students Promoting Organic Kinship with the Environment) joining voices west to east

Canada’s conventional food production system will be challenged this summer. A group of students from Ontario are cycling across Canada to raise national awareness about the benefits of organic farming and the threats of genetically engineered organisms in our food. Their 70 day journey begins in Port Renfrew BC, Tuesday, June 20. It ends in St. John's, Newfoundland, August 28.

This nationwide event provides an opportunity for organic farmers, processors, retailers, and individuals to promote organic farming, educate consumers, and improve Canada's sustainable food production system. SPOKE is working with Canadian Organic Growers Inc. (COG) and the organic network to support the agri-food industry's transition to organic farming and ecological agriculture; as well as the development of community gardens and sustainable land management projects at universities, colleges, public schools, and throughout Canadian communities. In true millennium fashion, the ride can be followed on the internet @ www.ecoexplorer.com.

To demonstrate Canada's growing organic food market, SPOKE cyclists are eating only organic food donated from farmers and retailers throughout the trip. Supporters will be advertised at local media events across the country and be recorded in a SPOKE photo/video documentary.

 COG and SPOKE, SPEAKING TOGETHER

COG will join SPOKE at each of the 15 major events to carry out, fund raising, membership registrations, and ecological agriculture education. Farmers, growers, retailers, educators and consumers will speak together to voice the importance of organic food production at each of the events.

COG is encouraging Canadians to demand sustainable agriculture in Canada and say goodbye to genetically engineered foods.

 ENCOURAGEMENT HELPS

SPOKE cyclists encourage members of the public to join them as they ride into town. Their itinerary can be found on the Internet. Help to raise awareness about environmental initiatives in your area by attending the SPOKE organic events. Encourage government support of the transition to organic farming and get Canada speaking together for sustainability.
