Wettest May on Record

June 1, 2017

Comparing Total Precipitation for Month of May.

It's abundantly clear; with Lake Ontario at its highest levels in 100 years, we had a lot of rain last month. How much?

Well, I decided to do some digging. Turns out, from the past 6 years of data, Peterborough has received on average 54 mm of rain during the month of May. The 30 year average is closer to 75mm of rain for May.

How much did we receive this year?

Crazy Wet May Weather

The average monthly rainfall for May over the past six years is less than the 30-year average. Last year's total for May was only 15mm of rainfall. And then there was this year with a staggering 182 mm. We knew we received more than the usual precipitation levels, but after studying the climate data and comparing it to the averages for the month, it's clear just how crazy the rains have been.
