Jane’s Walk Peterborough 2012 — submit your ideas

March 7, 2012

On the first weekend of May 2012, Peterborough Ontario will once again participate in Jane’s Walk — the international event to commemorate Jane Jacobs and promote walkable neighbourhoods, urban literacy, cities planned for and by people. After spearheading our city’s involvement in Jane’s Walk three years ago, I am pleased to be coordinating the event again this year as the Peterborough Jane’s Walk City Organizer. I am helping to develop this year’s list of walking conversations in collaboration with the Municipal Heritage Committee—PACAC (local sponsor)—and the Peterborough Field Naturalists, and am welcoming your input.

Do you have a story to tell about your neighbourhood or special place in the city? Anyone can lead a Jane’s Walk. If you’re interested, please let me know by completing the form below by March 23rd. Now, don’t worry if your walk is still in draft form by this date, but I am looking to coordinate with leaders and fit the walks into the local schedule. Full walk descriptions are needed for media launch before April.

Last year, the Municipal Heritage Committee (PACAC) teamed up with the PFN to organize four walks in total: two on Saturday, two on Sunday. There was an Otonabee River walk, the Auburn Mills neighbourhood walk, a tour of Downtown buildings, and a great historical walk of Jackson Park lead by Sheryl Smith of Parks Canada. There were over 150 people in total who attended last year, and several people actually attended all four of the walks. This year I’m hoping to see 6 to 8 walks in the line-up.[/toggle]
